In our last post, we talked about why we stick to small batches. Today, we’re diving into one of the most exciting (and most requested) parts of what we do at Small Town Traditions: how we build our scents.
A great beard oil shouldn’t just sit on your face; it should tell a story. Here is a look at how we take a simple idea and turn it into a signature fragrance.
It Starts with a Memory
Every scent we create begins with a "vibe." We don’t just think about ingredients like cedar or citrus; we think about experiences.
Is this the smell of a crisp morning in the woods? * Is it the sophisticated, clean scent of a classic barbershop?
Is it the warm, rugged aroma of a woodshop at sunset?
Once we have the "feeling" down, we start selecting the oils that will bring that vision to life.
The Architecture of a Scent
Creating a balanced fragrance is like building a house. We work with three distinct layers to ensure the scent lasts and evolves throughout your day:
Top Notes: These are the first things you smell when you open the bottle. They’re usually bright and sharp (like lime, bergamot, or peppermint) and provide that initial "wow" factor.
Heart Notes: As the top notes fade, the heart emerges. This is the "body" of the scent—often floral, spicy, or herbal—that gives the fragrance its true character.
Base Notes: These are the heavy hitters. Scents like sandalwood, leather, or vanilla provide the foundation. They linger the longest and keep you smelling great hours after you’ve applied your balm or oil.
The "Test Drive" Phase
This is where the Small Town Traditions commitment to quality really kicks in. We don’t just mix and ship. Every new scent goes through a rigorous testing phase. We wear it ourselves, we let our friends test it, and we see how it holds up in different environments—whether it’s a humid workday or a cold evening. If the scent doesn't stay true or it loses its balance after an hour, it goes back to the drawing board.
Why It Matters
We know that your beard is the first thing people notice. A scent that is too overpowering can be distracting, but one that is too weak feels like a missed opportunity. Our goal is to find that "just right" balance that gives you a boost of confidence every time you catch a whiff of your own beard.
